Cloth Diapers

If you have ever considered using cloth diapers on your child for financial or environmental reasons, I am sure you had lots of questions.

  • What exactly are your options?
  • How much does it cost?
  • Does it really save money?
  • How hard is it to clean them?

Check out the series I wrote for a local blog in my area where I answer all these questions and more!

One of the best ways to save money when you start having kids is to use cloth diapers.  Diapering your child is one of the most costly expenses in the first few years.  By polling a few friends of mine, I figured out that most people spend around $1300-$1500 total to diaper one child using disposables.  Spread out over 2-3 years, this does not seem like a lot.  But what if you are planning on having multiple children?

Additionally, many people are concerned about the environmental effects of disposable diapers.  There are disposable diapers out there that are much gentler on the environment, but those come at a premium cost.

If you are nervous about the up-front investment of cloth diapering or the laundry situation or anything else, stick around to find out that while yes, it is a bit of a different lifestyle than traditional diapering, it really is not all that bad!  Click here to read more…

Cleaning cloth diapers is probably what scares most people away when someone suggests cloth diapering to them.  It really is not that bad.

Many people swear that you need a top-loader machine with an agitator to truly clean your diapers, but we have Kenmore HE front loaders and I have had almost no problems with getting my diapers clean.

If you are exclusively breastfeeding, diaper laundry is super easy until you start solids.  Everything up until then is water soluble so there are no worries about dumping, swishing, or spraying your diapers (more on that later).  Click here to read more…

Cloth Diapering 101: How Much Does it Cost?

As mentioned in the beginning, there is definitely an initial up-front investment cost when it comes to cloth diapering that does not exist for disposable diapers.  Especially in the early stages, if you had generous friends and family, you probably have a nice little stockpile of disposable diapers.

However, depending on the style and brand of diapers that you invest in, the initial cost can be managed.  Additionally, there are other options to reduce your cost such as buying used diapers (much more popular than you would think!) or applying for a program that offers assistance based on income.  More on both of those options in this post.  Click here to read more…
